Snowmen At Night

This week in reading we read Snowmen at Night. We discussed the parts of the book, the characters and setting. Students had to put the story in order of how it happened. They got to draw their favorite part of the story (what the snowmen did), and what they would do if they were snowmen. And we finished up with them continuing with what they would do if they were snowmen at night and they had to give two reasons why they chose what they did.

In math this week we continued to work on our math journals. We worked more on shapes, and measurement. We graphed our favorite winter activities and identified which had the most/least. We reviewed numbers that come before and after, as well as which is more or less. We even started to add a little bit. We will continue working on adding next week!

We are also continuing to work on counting to 100 by ones and tens. I let the class know I would be making a counting to 100 (by ones, tens, and fives) chart this weekend and when someone is able to count to one hundred fluently by ones, fives, or tens they would get to put a sticker on the chart. Our goal is to get everyone counting to 100 then having a party! I told them to practice at home as well. You can check out Jack Hartmann's videos on counting to 100 by ones, tens, and fives, they all really like them.

In writing this week we worked on sounding out words. We all seem to be struggling with it. I am telling them that I do not care that they spell the words right, but I want to see the sounds they hear in the words. I tell them to say the word really slow and hear each sound. We also worked a little more on writing sentences and knowing that letters make words, and words together makes a sentence, and we need spaces in our words, and punctuation at the end.

Image result for STEM

We started our January STEM project today. We are making a map of the school from a bird eyes view. Then they will have to decide the fastest escape route from their map. They will program a Bee Bot or a Coding Mouse to get out of their map. We looked at our escape route map from our classroom, and they brainstormed on what they thought the school looked like from a birds eye view. Then they had to draw what they thought the fastest escape route would be. Then each group got a sheet of chart paper with two stickers on each end for doors. We discussed how our hallway is long with doors at each end. Then we took a walk down the halls and found other hallways with doors and put them on the map, along with stickers for the doors. When we come back on Monday they will decide as a group which route they think is the best, then predict what they have to program on the Bee Bot or Coding Mouse.

100th Day Fun!

We had so much fun on the 100th day!

We made 100 piece trail mix

  • Thank you all so much for the donations!

We made a 100 snowflake snowglobe!

We did 100 Exercise
(10 times for 10 movements)

We worked on writing 100 words, but came up short (too busy rest of day), will continue next week.....We will Finish!

We also wrote about what we would buy with $100. Made a self portrait of what we would look like when we are 100 years old, and what we would do if we were 100!

This week in reading we read Sneezy the Snowman. With it we discussed how to build a snowman, they drew pictures and wrote how to build a snowman in order. We discussed cause and effect, students identified the cause (hot cocoa, hot tub, fire) and the effect (sneezy melted). We also worked on the order of the book, what happened first-seventh. Students also worked on a sheet to tell how else sneezy could be just right, not to hot and not to cold. And, we ended with creating a melted snowman, and writing an alternate ending for sneezy.

In math this week we continued to work in our math journals. We practiced adding one more, and roll to make a snowman (rolled dice and drew what that number represented). We worked on measurement, students had to decorate the biggest snowman in each group, and measure snowflakes with cubes and write the number for how many cubes. We did a review on shapes, and they had to color certain shapes on each page, and we even made shapes out of playdough.

This week in writing we also combined social studies and we focused on MLK Jr. We read books and watched videos on him and all he has done, and had some great discussions. Students got to label a picture of MLK Jr., as well as did a word sort with Dream, Speech, and fair. Students also worked on writing sentences about MLK Jr. and worked on starting with capital letter, putting spaces between words, and ending with punctuation. We ran out of time for their dream project (what their dream is), so we will work on it Monday.

We went to science lab this week and talked about living, non living, and once living. Mrs. Knobbe asked students what things needed to to be alive, and how we know if something was once living. She had planned on us going outside and finding items that were living, non living, and once living, but the weather was not so great. We still were able to go out under the awnings and find a few things. Thank you to the volunteers that come and help, it is really appreciated!

So, it is that time of year that germs are still all over and spreading. We do ask the students to wash their hands a lot and use sanitizer, as well as wipe down tables, and clean the classroom. With that being said we are low on Lysol wipes. If you would like to donate them we would be so grateful!

Image result for reading

In reading this quarter we will continue to work on sight words students should know up to 50 by the end of the quarter. Some fun ways to work on these (other than just flash cards) is write them in sand and say them. Hide the cards around house and have them find them and tell what they are. Sight word bingo, or sight word basketball, show word and if they get it right they shoot the ball if not you get to shoot the ball. Put the words of the week on bedroom door and have them read them before they enter their room. There are also tons of ideas on pinterest.

Also, read with your students every night. Take turns reading with them, you read a page they read a page. Find books that interest them. Ask them questions throughout the book, who are the characters? Where is the setting? What is the problem/solution? Have them tell you about a story read in class.

Image result for writing

In writing this quarter we will continue to work on forming the letters. Students should be able to write all the letters uppercase and lowercase independently. We will also continue working on sounding out and writing words. Have your students practice writing words at home, and having them write what they hear. We will also continue working on writing sentences and making sure we start with an uppercase, put spaces between words, and end with punctuation.

Image result for Math

In math this quarter we will continue to work on counting. Students should be able to consistently and independently count to 100 by ones and tens. Students will also need to count as many as 20 objects in a line, rectangular array, or circle. We will continue to work on counting two sets of objects and identify if one set is more, less, or equal. We will start working on adding and subtracting within 5. We did a pre-test this week and I was impressed with how well students did. We will also work on addition and subtraction word problems.

Image result for science and social studies
In science this quarter we will start discussing living and nonliving organisms. Students will have to identify whether an item is living or nonliving and sort into groups based on attributes. We will also work on describing the physical attributes of Earth materials (soil, rocks, water, and air).

In social studies we will continue to learn about American holidays, Martin Luther King, Jr., Presidents Day. We will also learn about American Symbols, Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, and White House. We will continue to work on positive character traits, and what it means to be a good citizen.
