This week in reading we read The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats. We discussed what the weather was like, what we wear in winter, and what happens to the snow if it gets warm. We also worked on a what we do in winter and what we don't do. We worked on a comprehension sheet and discussed who the main character was, what he did before he went outside, what he did outside, what happened with the stick, and the snowball. We ended the week with writing stories of their own on what they would do on a snowy day.

In math this week we reviewed addition on Monday. Most of them are doing great with addition! Then we got to work with subtraction. We used number lines this week, as well as manipulatives. We ended the week using playdough and doing a playdough smash activity. We will work on subtraction one more week then get into story problems with addition and subtraction. Please continue on working on counting to 100 by ones, tens, and fives, we want everyone to get an award at the end of the year!

In writing this week we focused on polar bears! The students really enjoyed watching videos, listening to books, and powerpoints about polar bears and learned a lot of neat things! We wrote books all about polar bears and have them displayed in the hallway. We connected this with our STEM this week. We are continuing to work on sounding out words, starting sentence with a capital letter, putting spaces between our words, and ending with punctuation.

For our STEM project this month students were able to create a habitat for a polar bear. They had to identify what the polar bear needed in his habitat (food, water, shelter). They thought up a plan a sketched it out. They worked together in groups and decided who was going to make what. They worked so well together and created some great habitats. It was so fun to see how creative they were, and how well they worked together. Thank you to everyone for all of your donations!

We also found out yesterday that our school is now STEM Certified! We are so excited and PROUD of all our teachers and students hard work and what they have done to make this happen!

This week in reading we red Roses Are Pink Your Feet Really Stink. It was a great story that we learned about feelings and how our actions can hurt others. We also had some great rhyming words that we did some activities with, as well as ways we can make others feel happy!

In writing this week we tied in social studies and wrote about President George Washington and President Abraham Lincoln. We learned some fun different facts about them, did some sorting with words, and made some directed drawing of each of them. We continued to work on sounding out words, writing sentences with spaces between our words and ending with punctuation.
