Room on the Broom

Our book of the week last week was Room on the Broom. We read this book because, one I love the month of October and Halloween, and two I wanted to incorporate motion and gravity for our upcoming STEM day.

In reading we continued to work on the different parts of the book, author, illustrator, title, characters, and setting. We also started to work on problems and solutions of books. They were able to identify the problem (there were a few) and solutions in Room on the Broom. We will continue to work on this with other books. We also have introduce different types of print, story books (fiction/nonfiction or True/not true), and poems. Students were able to identify the different types of print and identify the similarities and differences. We also worked on a coloring page that they had to color based on what the poem said, it gave clues and showed how students were able to use their listening to decipher what needed to be colored.

In math last week we continued to work on shapes both 2D and 3D. Students were able to identify what shapes were 2D or 3D and talk about their different attributes. We will continue to work on shapes next week. We will also continue working on counting and identifying if a group is more or less.

In writing this week we worked on writing the letter O and our sight words. Students also completed a writing sample where they drew a picture of their favorite thing they did over September break and had to try and write what it was. Some students struggled with sounding out words so we worked on it over the week. Most students seem to know their letter sounds but need to work on blending sounds to make words. This is something we will work on more next week and in the future.

We had our second STEM day on Friday. It was a huge success and students loved it! Throughout the week we worked on vocabulary, motion, gravity, 3D shapes. We also watched videos on motion and gravity to get a better understanding and when they found out on Thursday we were making roller coasters we watched an informational video on roller coasters. Students were actively engaged in each lesson, and when it came time to brainstorm on what they would like for their roller coaster to look like, and how they would make it they created some great work. On Friday I was So Impressed with what they were able to create! We have a very creative group this year and I look forward to seeing what they do in the future.
