Image result for AFTER THE FALL

This weeks book will be After the Fall by Dan Santant. We will be focusing on perseverance and not giving up. We will discuss how important it is to not give up and keep working at things that may be difficult. We will talk about times they wanted to give up, and then kept working until they accomplished the task. There have been times in the class that students have said I can't, in which we respond this is an I CAN TRY classroom and we all try even though it may be new and difficult. I am looking forward to this lesson and watching the students succeed!

      • Folks: people
      • Grand: very important
      • Managed: successful in doing something
      • Admit:  say that something is true

In math this week we will continue to focus on number recognition, counting (1:1 correspondence), and counting on from any given number. Most students do well with counting but, usually start at one and count on. We are trying to challenge them to count on from higher numbers, this is something that can be done at home as well. We will also start to talk about 2-D and 3-D shapes.

We will continue to compare and sort different objects made of different materials. Students will start to learn about their 5 senses and how we use them to help sort objects of different materials. Last week in science lab students did some sorting of different materials, and also did some sink and float experiments. We also had a lot of fun on ou first STEM day on Wednesday! Students worked in groups and got to choose as a group whether they wanted to build a boat out of craft sticks, bubble wrap, or aluminum foil. They were each given the material they chose along with tape and given time to create the boat together. After they built their team boat they got to take turns and show if their boat floated or sank. All the boats floated! Then they each got to take turns putting counting bears on the boats to see how many their boat could hold before it sank. They had a lot of fun and I was impressed with their designs!

Last week in social studies we continued working on what it means to be a good citizen in our school. We also discussed labor day and why we celebrate it. We will continue to talk about labor day this week, as well as the U.S. Flag, Georgia Flag, and the Pledge of Allegiance. We will talk about what the different parts of the flags represent and what the Pledge of Allegiance means.

Students are continuing to do great on homework, and are so excited to tell me about what they did. Each week builds off of the previous so some of the sight words used or letters may be from the previous weeks. I do call up students and have them tell me where something is in their journal from the homework. I do this so they can tell me about their work, and I can get an idea of where they are with the tasks. I also like to hear about what they are reading. Sometimes I will try to incorporate the books they like into lessons, so they can make connections from home and school.

We have gone to the computer lab the last two weeks. The first week we logged in the students and this week we let them try to log in themselves. It was a little tricky, but some of them did really well. It is a little tricker in the computer lab or our desktop computers in the classroom as most of them are not used to a mouse and expect to touch the screen and it work. If you can have your students practice logging in to Reading Eggs and RAZ Kids that will help, their log in for those sites are the same log in for the computers at school.

Please continue to check purple folders/agendas daily as we send stuff home that way and also send notes home in them. Continue to put how they are getting home in the agendas, it really helps with dismissal, and if it changes just write it in the agenda. Students can get ice cream on Fridays as long as there is a note in their agenda.
