This week we read a bunch of different versions of the Gingerbread Man/Boy. We worked on identifying problems and solutions, characters and settings, comparing the different stories, and even more. Today students got to write their own gingerbread story and create a gingerbread out of paper and other craft materials. It was great to see their imaginations going! Ask them which story was their favorite and why? Who were the characters? What was the problem and solution?
In math this week we continued to work on addition. We worked on adding using our fingers, with drawings, with dice, dominoes, and even students. We discussed how adding is putting two numbers together and we get a bigger number for the answer. We also discussed how to make a number sentence _+_=_. We looked at each number sentence we wrote and discussed how 3+1 & 1+3 will both equal 4, or how 2+2, 3+1, 1+3, 4+0, and 0+4 all equal 4! Next week we will start to work on subtraction. We also continued to work on counting to 100 by ones, fives, and tens! We have a chart in our class with every students name and when they can count to 100 by either ones, fives, or tens they get to put a sticker next to their names. We are encouraging them to practice counting at home as well. Our goal is to get every student in our class counting to 100 by ones, fives, and tens!
In writing this week we started off with our letter of the week Y and discussed how it can make 3 different sounds! We also focused on writing about Groundhog Day. Students practiced labeling a groundhog, writing facts about the groundhog, making predictions on whether the groundhog would or would not see his shadow, and writing sentences about groundhogs. We continue to work on sounding out words to write, starting a sentence with a capital, putting spaces between words, and ending with punctuation (. ? !).
We will be doing our next stem day on Thursday January 27th, 2020. A letter was sent home this week about materials needed. I am also adding it here.
Dear Kindergator Parents,
